Our story
Four generations
of steel, grit and
untamed wilderness.
Founded on a deep family tradition, our roots were forged by co-owners Johan Leonard and his sons, Sean and Karl.

01
Oupa Charles
Blacksmithing is part of our heritage, passed down through four generations. It began with "Oupa Charles," a travelling blacksmith and farrier in the South African Free State. Hot steel, an anvil and pure determination. He laid the foundation.
02
The frontier
His descendants carried those skills to Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, where forging became an essential part of carving out a living on the wild frontier.
03
The Waterberg
When the Bush War broke out, the family faced relocation and ultimately lost their 3,500-acre farm. Returning to South Africa, they resettled in the rugged Waterberg Mountains along the Mogol River. It was here that Sean and Karl grew up hunting, fishing and experimenting with leaf-spring steel to craft their first bushcraft blades.
04
2018 · Lionhearted
That passion officially became Lionhearted Bladeworks, delivering rugged, field-tested tools to anti-poaching units, tactical operators and outdoorsmen across Africa.
05
A new home
As conditions in South Africa grew increasingly dangerous for Afrikaner farming families, our journey took another drastic turn. Guided by faith, perseverance and the hand of the Lord, we left our farm to seek a safe future. Today, Lionhearted Bladeworks has found its new home in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
